Tech Tips - Phishing Attack

Description: http://www.federalbank.co.in/userfiles/phishing%20attack.jpg

Phishing is a technique employed by criminals to get hold of your personal information. A phishing email will have the look and feel of an authentic email. It can take many forms. It can be a job offer or it can be about your winning a lottery or about security breaches in your bank account etc. The e-mail usually encourages you to click a link in order to update your personal information. When you click the link, you may be asked to enter your personal information, such as your name, address, date of birth, ATM / Debit card number, password etc. If you provide these details, the fraudsters can steal your identity as well as your funds. Therefore, if you receive such e-mails, that appear to be from Federal Bank and if they ask you to provide your personal information, please ignore the e-mail and never try to open that link.

How can I protect myself from Phishing?

·         While you are logging into any online banking, always check the URL address given in the address bar. URL address on the address bar of your internet browser begins with "https"; the letter 's' at the end of "https" means 'secured'.

·         Look for the padlock icon appearing at the top or bottom of the browser and click on it to see the verisign certificate issued to the site, authenticating it as the official website of Federal Bank. Alternatively click on the verisign icon to see the certificate. Follow the precautions mentioned there in, while viewing.

·         Most of the banks never sends e-mail and embedded links asking you to provide personal details such as your Account number, Debit Card number, ATM PIN or Online Banking passwords. If you receive such e-mails, never respond to them.

·         When you want to login any online banking site, please type the appropriate site address in the address bar of the browser and then click the online banking link provided at the home page. Never make use of links provided / stored anywhere else.

How can I identify phishing emails?

·         Most often, phishing e-mails may contain spelling mistakes or grammar mistakes.

·         Some e-mails may promise a prize or lure you about winning a lottery and ask you to provide your personal information.

·         Often fraudulent emails are sent out in bulk and hence they are addressed to generic terms such as customer or client.

·         The from address of the email may look like an official email id but if you right click and see the properties, you will find the email address will be totally different.

·         Fraudulent emails may reference vague problems dealing with "technical upgrades" or "account problems" without giving any specific information.

·         The spam e-mails may direct you to counterfeit websites carefully designed to look like the real one. Hence such websites may look very similar and familiar to you, but are in fact used to collect personal information for illegal use. In such cases, always check the URL address appearing in the address bar of your browser, which will be a fake one. (Eg : The correct address for Bank’s corporate website is http://www.federalbank.co.in and that of Internet Banking site is https://www.fednetbank.com).

·         You may also receive e-mails which convey a sense of emergency or threat. Example: “Your account will be closed or temporarily suspended if you don't provide us the information.

What can I do ?

In case of a phishing attack, please contact the bank toll free or send an email their call center.
